PROFESSOR STEPHEN FITZGERALD
Chair, Asia-Australia Institute, and Chair of the Committee to Advise on Australia’s Immigration Policies (CAAIP), 1987-88

Any of the predictions of major catastrophe, inter-racial catastrophe, which might have been made at the time, they have all been confounded. And while in the early eighties we had the debate that was triggered by Geoffrey Blainey - and at the time it created a major stir - with each successive recurrence of this debate, for example the one triggered by John Howard in the late eighties, each successive recurrence has been at a much lower level of public activism and public airing, and the echoes it seems to me are smaller and smaller.
