MARK LEIBLER
Community activist, Melbourne Jewish community

I think something that affects all ethnic communities here in Australia and worldwide is this global phenomenon of the increasing tide of racism and anti-Semitism. We see it rearing its ugly head in many places, in Russia, Eastern Europe and Western Europe. Here in Australia, fortunately, we're blessed to live in a society which hasn't really suffered from this phenomenon of extreme racism and anti-Semitism in the same way as it's occurred in Europe and elsewhere, but not withstanding that, we're certainly not immune from it.

CONTINUATION OF INTERVIEW AS TEXT

Various ethnic communities have reported an increase in the number and intensity of racial incidents. And that's a matter for concern. We believe very strongly, that both for purposes of education and for purposes of deterrence, it's important that the Federal Government acts in order to introduce appropriate racial vilification legislation backed by tough criminal sanctions.
